Falkland Estate Consultation – Refresh of Long Term Forest Plan
Falkland estate is preparing to refresh its Long Term Forest Plan (LTFP) – and we want to hear from you!
-
A LTFP is a 20-year strategic management plan that sets out how the woodlands will be managed and developed over time. Permission for felling and thinning are just for the first 10-years of the plan, at which point the plan will need to be refreshed.
It describes:
The objectives for the woodland
The management actions needed to achieve these objectives
How activities such as thinning, felling and restocking will be carried out
-
Falkland Estate’s previous LTFP has now expired and must be updated to continue managing the woodlands responsibly and safely.
Refreshing the plan will allow the Estate to:
Carry out essential tree safety works
Continue thinning and felling operations where needed
Restock woodlands with species better suited to current and future conditions
Apply for public funding to carry out woodland management work
-
Many of you will already be familiar with and value Falkland Estate and will regularly go for walks, visit the cafe or attend events. The Estate will continue to priorities people and nature, but some important decisions need to be made about how different woodland areas are managed in the future. This may include:
Thinning or felling certain stands
Increasing tree species diversity (including more mixed broadleaves or suitable conifers)
Generating sustainable income to support the Estate’s environmental and community programmes
Your feedback will help guide the plan and ensure it reflects the needs and values of those who use and enjoy the Estate today.
-
An in-person drop-in consultation will take place on: Wednesday 24th June
