Scottish Forestry Strategy Review - Forestry for People Advisory Panel Topic PaperThe Panel have issued a guidance document for consideration if you are responding to the Scottish Forestry Strategy. The consultation for this review is happening in 2 stages - one launched at the RHS on Friday 24th June, which is accompanied by a set of papers on different topics, to stimulate thinking and draw input to a draft strategy. Second stage will be consultation on that draft (this autumn). As part of stage 1, the Panel has produced for FCS a topic paper on "social and community aspects of forestry" (now available with the other topic papers on the FCS website). The Panel is keen to ensure a wide readership for this paper (FCS is not intending to circulate the topic papers beyond the website)
National Forest Land Scheme to be launched on 20th June at Abriachan Forest TrustThe National Forest Land Scheme enables communities around Scotland to buy publicly owned forests managed by Forestry Commission Scotland, without waiting for the Commission to put them up for sale first. It will be launched by Scottish Forestry Minister Lewis Macdonald at Abriachan on Monday 20 June 2005
The Scheme also provides for the Commission to sell national forest land for affordable housing to housing associations and trusts, and for "sponsored" land sales, where communities will have opportunities to buy surplus national forest land that the Commission proposes to sell.
The scheme builds on the Right to Buy principles enshrined in Scotland’s Land Reform Act, but goes a step further by enabling communities to initiate discussions where Forestry Commission land is not actually on the market.
