New Caledonian Woodlands - Programme of Events 2016 Woodland Weekends, Re-Skilling Workshops and Wood Fuel Days for 2016.

14th February - 23rd April
February

12th - 14th February 2016 - Bamff Beaver & Boar Woodland Weekend

They are going back to the home of the beavers. Bamff is a lovely place on the edge of Perthshire and Angus with hills, woods and streams and its own resident population of European beaver and wild boar. Their visit usually includes a guided tour with the owner, who will answer any questions you are ever likely to have about any large Scottish native animals.

20th February 2016 - Wood Fuel Day

Lend a hand managing local woodlands and stock up on firewood in preparation for the winter nights. Their wood fuel days are all about managing woodlands sustainably for the benefit of biodiversity, while also generating timber to take home, season and then use to warm us in the cold, dark winter months.

27th - 28th February 2016 - Bowl Carving Weekend Workshop

Over this two day course based on a quiet site near the Botanic Gardens, you will use a range of hand tools to carve a beautiful and functional bowl from locally sourced timber with each bowl being completely unique.

March

11th - 13th March 2016 - Spectacular Speyside Woodland Weekend

Anagach Woods, close to Grantown on Spey, are a large fragment of the original ancient Caledonian pinewoods. They are rich in wildlife- plants, fungi, insects, birds and animals, some like the crossbill, unique to the pinewoods. Last year, they improved access, made an artistic seat, painted a gate. This year, it will probably be more access improvements and thinning young trees.

19th - 20th March 2016 - Rustic Furniture Making Workshop

This two day workshop will give you the opportunity to build a piece of rustic furniture from scratch in a woodland setting local to Edinburgh. A flexible design process will be applied throughout the weekend, from harvesting and preparing suitable timber, learning simple green woodworking techniques to assembling the finished piece - a chair, a bench, a table…Leading to a unique and robust product suitable for home or garden.

26th March 2016 - Wood Fuel Day

April

1st - 3rd April 2016 - Curiously Kilfinan Woodland Weekend

Will we visit the round house? Or explore the productive gardens carved out of an acid, rocky hillside? Or discover a long lost waterfall? Or camp out in a shanty town? Or hear the celebrations as Kyles win the shinty cup yet again? Kilfinan is unlike any other weekend. A treasure of a community woodland hidden deep in the Argyll forests.

9th April 2016 - Wood Fuel Day

23rd April 2016 - Art in the Woods - Naming the Trees & Drawing the Trees

For this one day workshop they have decided to blend the understandings of a forester and an artist, combining a shared love of trees from different starting points. They will be visiting Arniston Woods, the much loved local woods of William Gillies, a Scottish artist who lived at Temple.
