Argyll Small Woods Cooperative - Small Woods Management Spring Events, Supported by Forestry Commission Scotland

27th January - 12th March
Argyll Small Woods Cooperative was set up in 2014 to support and encourage small scale woodland management in Argyll. Membership is open to woodland owners and workers whose primary purpose is to generate sustainable income from small woodlands.


The Cooperative is running a series of knowledge sharing and training events in 2015 focussing on small scale woodland management, covering how to access suitable equipment, network of contractors suitable for this type of work, potential markets for produce and providing advice and training.


Monitor Farm woods – we’ve looked at the farm – what about the farm woods?

27th January 2015. Glenbarr farms, Kintyre. Free

This event will introduce participants to the management options for conifer plantations, shelterbelts and native woodland.

Hardwood assessment – Dunollie Estate

12th February 2015. Oban bay Hotel and Dunollie Estate. Free

This event will introduce participants to the process of inspecting and grading hardwood timber, methods of sale and how to access the market.

5 day NPTC - Maintenance, Cross-cutting & Felling Small Trees - 9-13th February 2015.

2 day Lantra Maintenance and cross cut chainsaw course - 14th and 15th February and 16th and 17th February.

Glencraigs Farm - Woodland Planning – the basics

26th February 2015. Glencraigs farm, Kintyre. Free

This event will introduce participants to small woodland planning covering thinning regime, stability, inventory and putting a forest plan together.

Glencraigs Farm. Thinning for wood fuel

12th March 2015. Glencraigs farm, Kintyre. Free

This event will demonstrate the process involved in thinning a plantation for wood fuel. The event will take participants through planning for thinning and demonstrate the process of manual felling and extraction using small scale harvesting machinery.
