Coppice Workshop (Practical)

Come and learn about coppicing, what it is and why you should do it! This one day workshop will look at the historical context, coppice products and practical coppice cutting. We will explore the biodiversity of coppice sites, a range of uses for coppice products, tools and techniques.

The workshop will be run in an established coppice site and will be outdoors, please wear suitable clothing and boots or willies. The site is on the B759, Cathkin Road, Carmunnock
Wear sturdy boots and waterproof clothing.
Aim: A one day course on practical coppice management looking at:

• Historical context
• Biodiversity
• Safe use of hand tools
• Demonstration and hands on experience of coppice cutting
• Layering and planting willow
• Discussion of willow uses


9.30 Welcome and Introductions

10.00 Health and safety
•Moving around the site
•First Aid – kits available, first aid certificates
•Safe use of hand tools; bow saw, silky saw, loppers

10.30 Demonstration of coppicing and hands on session
•Demonstration of tool use, safety etc
•Stool selection, health etc
•Stocking density, layering etc
•Taking cuttings and planting

12.00 Lunch
•Please bring a packed lunch or food to prepare on the fire

13.00 Coppice cutting session
•Continue cutting practice
•Produce grading and storage

15.00 Coppice woodland biodiversity
•Variety uses
•Ground flora
•Birds etc

16.00 Course close
•Group photo

Information for course delegates

Location: The course will be held at Carmunnock Coppice Woodland, Carmunnock, Cathkin Road (B759).

Times: We will meet up 9.30 for a 10 o’clock start and we will finish at 4pm

Parking: Parking will be off road in a small parking bay, signs will be out on the road. Additional parking can be found on Gallowhill Road, Carmunnock.

Lunch: Tea and coffee will be available whenever the fire is lit! Please bring a packed lunch or food to prepare on the fire.

Clothing: Please wear clothing appropriate to the season, the course will benefit from whatever the Scottish weather throws at us. The site is prone to flooding and is muddy, please wear suitable footwear.

Children: Sorry this course is for the over 16’s only.
