NWDG Woodland History Conference 2012 (Perth)

25th October
The 2012 History Conference will be held on Thursday 25 October 2012, at the AK Bell Library in Perth.

This year, our theme is ‘Woods, trade and boats.’ We are fundamentally an island nation and so it seems entirely appropriate that this year’s woodland history conference should explore the influence of Scottish trade links and the use of timber in Scotland and how that impacted on our woods.

We are delighted to welcome from Norway, Arnvid Lillehammer, emeritus Professor of Stavanger University, who has worked extensively on the Scottish-Norwegian timber trade. This keynote talk will dovetail with the significant body of work that Anne Crone and Coralie Mills have amassed on tree-ring evidence from Scotland, and links in well with Scottish shipbuilding over the ages. We feel very fortunate to have attracted other notable speakers, who will talk about various periods of boat and ship building, including Eric Graham, an authority on the building of James IV’s famous Great Michael, Robert Prescott of the Scottish Maritime Museum at Anstruther and Dan Atkinson, a maritime archaeologist, as well as Jim Skelton, author of the highly regarded book about the shipbuilding industry on the Spey, Speybuilt, the story of a forgotten industry. We are pleased also to be able to consider earlier maritime interests, with brothers Gavin and Colin Parsons talking about the legendary Birlinn, both in history and 20th century reconstructions. Finally, it is a great pleasure to introduce Barbara Crawford, a leading expert on Norse influences on Scotland. We believe this fantastic line-up will encourage stimulating discussion and so, as ever, we have left plenty of time for discussion.
