Site Recognition, Tree Species Selection and Ground Preparation on Marginal Sites for Woodland Creation


Course objectives


The course aims develop a deeper understanding of the principles of site classification and the conclusions for species selection and ground preparation. The practical course work focuses on gathering the necessary information to carry out an ecological site classification, to produce a site plan and to develop recommendations for species selection as well as tree establishment. The course focus is on marginal sites in the Scottish Highlands and on the creation of new native woodlands.


At the end of the course you will be able to:
• plan and carry out a site survey;
• explain the principal soil groups and types, and identify them in the field;
• identify a range of indicator plants for soil fertility;
• convert the data gathered on site surveys into site class information;
• explain aspects of tree species selection and site requirements of the main tree species; and
• give recommendations for species selection and suitable ground preparation options.


Course duration: 3 days, 6th / 7th/ 8th June 2012


Number of delegates: at least 10, no more than 20. Course costs: £350 pp. The cost is covered by L&D Service Level Agreement for FC staff; the full cash charge applies to external customers. Please note that lunch is not provided.
