CWA Conference 2014 - 23/24 August, DunbarCWA Conference 2014 - 23/24 August, Dunbar
Added: 10 Jul 2014

This year’s CWA Conference and AGM will take place in Dunbar, John Muir’s birthplace, and looks set to be a great weekend, with plenty of opportunities to network, share experiences and be inspired by a diverse line up of speakers, workshops and site visits.

The theme of the conference is “Making the connections”, and we’ll be focussing on how community woodlands connect with different sections of the communities they serve, and how they link up the economic, social and environmental benefits they produce. Most of all, the conference is about connecting up those who manage Scotland’s community woods. The most important ingredient for any conference is the people, and there’s always plenty of networking time, not least at the conference dinner and ceilidh on Saturday night. If you’ve been to a CWA conference before then you’ll know what to expect (and hopefully want to come again) but if not then why not come along and experience it for yourself!

The CWA Conference is supported by Forestry Commission Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Wood Products Workshop, ArgyllWood Products Workshop, Argyll
Added: 21 Jan 2013

Wood Products Workshop
Blarbuie Woodland Enterprise
Lochgilphead, Argyll
Thursday 7th and Friday 8th March 2013
9.30am – 4.30pm

Synopsis:
CWA has teamed up with the Big Tree Society and Highlands and Islands Enterprise to deliver a 2 day workshop which will be practical, informative, challenging and fun. Participants will explore the route from woodland to workshop, possible ways to market and review learning and identify what’s next for you, your woodland.

Workshop Objective:
The objective of this intensive two day workshop is to examine the planning, processes, prototyping, production, preparation and presentation of a small timber product from community woodlands to consumer.

This workshop is for people involved in Community Woodlands who enjoy making wood craft products and who would like to develop a strategy for their woodland.

Thursday 7th March - Resource management and product development
The workshop is based both indoors and outside. Day 1 will cover assessing and identifying resources using Blarbuie Woods as a working example. Based on resource assessment and potential markets participants will develop a prototype product.

Friday 8th March - Markets
Day 2 includes more practical experience as well as identifying markets, brand development and marketing techniques. The workshop will finish with a review and action planning session.

Led by Eoin Cox, the Big Tree Society workshop leaders collectively have over fifty years experience of working in the woods and forests, coppicing and making furniture and other woodland products. They bring with them a very hands-on teaching technique where the pieces produced are often the by-product of the workshop days. Participants will go away engaged, fulfilled and confident to learn more and share that practical knowledge of the woodland resource with their own groups.

Location:
Blarbuie Woodland Enterprise, Lochgilphead – for map click here http://goo.gl/maps/qy8UE
Beautiful, inspiring, tranquil, healing and accessible woods in the heart of Argyll, the woodlands form part of the sanctuary of Lochgilphead’s Argyll and Bute Hospital. Restored in 2007 they feature all-abilities access, sculptures and artworks. The woods feature a mix of native and exotic trees.

Tea/coffee, lunch and all tools required will be provided.

CWA Conference 2012 – To Celebrate 25 Years of Community Woodlands in ScotlandCWA Conference 2012 – To Celebrate 25 Years of Community Woodlands in Scotland
Added: 11 Jul 2012

In 1987 Wooplaw Community Woodland became the first community woodland buyout in Scotland, leading the way in the formation of a national movement that now boasts over 200 community woodlands in Scotland. The movement could not have begun without the ambition of its early founders (and of course the trees) but the growth of our movement has been largely down to the commitment, passion and enthusiasm of the individuals and communities throughout Scotland who are driving their woodlands to success.

On the 1st and 2nd of September CWA will celebrate these people, their places, their progress and their passion during our national conference. The conference will be held alongside the planned celebrations in Wooplaw Woods, working with the Wooplaw Wardens to deliver an inspirational, informative and fun weekend worthy of celebration.

The CWA Conference will be held at Tweed Horizons Centre, Newtown St. Boswells TD6 0SG and the Dinner/Ceilidh will be at the Buccleuch Arms Hotel, St Boswells, Melrose TD6 0EW.

Conference fees:

CWA Full & Umbrella Member groups: 2 free places
CWA Basic Member groups: 1 free place
All others: £50 per delegate

To book, complete the attached booking form and appropriate fee and send to: Caroline Derbyshire, CWA Administrator, Steading Cottage, Craigfield Farm, Kintessack, Forres, Moray IV36 2SP or use our online service.

Added: 07 Sep 2011
Borders based project SoLoCo, which launched on Monday, is the first ever dedicated crowdfunding website for the Third Sector – and its founders want it to revolutionise how communities and charities are funded in this country.

As part of this, the Assynt Foundation has launched a crowdfunding campaign to renovate the Glencanisp Gardens to create local enterprise, grow fresh produce, involve more local people and improve access to the estate. They are looking to raise £25,000 to renovate the dilapidated walled garden and bring it back to productive use.
